The Day Care Centre for the Elderly
— Seniors’ Club,
of the Church of St. Saviour in Riga, Latvia, was founded in 1996 by Mrs. Issy Sanderson and the Co-Director Ms. Sigita Lapina. Mrs. Sanderson has since left Latvia and the Director of the Club now is Ms. Solvita Sejane. The Seniors’ Club as an organization serves the needy from the Latvian, Russian, Polish and minority communities and aims to show the viability and importance of this type of social program.
The program goal of the Seniors’ Club is to address the physical and social needs of the 35 elderly and indigent people within the near and immediate environment of the Old Town of Riga. The meetings provide for their welfare, health, interaction, and psychological needs. In order to achieve this program goal, the Seniors’ Club carries out the following:
Ensure that the participants are able to receive hot meals free of charge twice each week.
Provide a range of social and activities programs.
Provide sanitary hygienic care facilities.
Co-operate with other private and public organizations within the community, which support and defend elderly and indigent people’s rights.
Draw attention to the problems of elderly and indigent people, through appropriate media publicity and assist with solutions to these problems.
Assist in developing the social fabric and structure of the city by bringing together the forgotten and poor of our community and providing them with care and friendship.
The Seniors’ Club uses the facilities of the Church of St. Saviour, but is a Non-Government Organization officially registered independently of the Church.
Through the energies of both Ms. Lapina and Mrs. Sanderson, the enormous task of creating, registering and setting up this organization was skilfully achieved. They obtained donations from both local and international individuals and organizations. A grant from the European Union for the financial expenses incurred for the year of 1998 was successful.
Present supervisor of the Seniors' Club is Ms. Solvita Sejane, a Latvian citizen, who has genuine care and concern for the elderly and indigent people of Riga (phone +371 67506604).
From a small beginning, the Seniors’ Club is now an independent organization presenting an innovative program and the opportunity to act as a pilot scheme for others to learn from and follow.
